From Hobby to Profession: My Journey as an Algarve Photographer
Some days, I have to pinch myself. Is this real? Am I really a professional photographer? It’s surreal to think that what was once my favourite hobby has become my career.
I bought my first DSLR camera about ten years ago, completely clueless about how it worked. Back then, photography was just a fun pastime—a way to capture memories and experiment with creativity. Fast forward to today, I work with multiple cameras, lenses, and years of accumulated knowledge to create images that tell stories and freeze moments in time.
Starting My Photography Business
My journey into professional photography began about four years ago. It wasn’t planned—it happened spontaneously after I moved to the Algarve. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the region and the vibrant energy of yoga retreats, I began taking photos of yogis simply for fun.
It wasn’t until someone asked me, “Why don’t you charge for this?” that I considered photography as more than just a hobby. That question planted the seed, and soon after, I booked my first paid photoshoots.
Overcoming Doubts and Building Confidence
Starting out was nerve-wracking. I’ll never forget the doubts I had during those early sessions. Was I good enough? Could I deliver what clients expected? But with each shoot, my confidence grew. I learned how to connect with people, put them at ease, and create a relaxed atmosphere where genuine, unposed moments could shine.
I also honed my editing skills, working to bring out the best in every shot while staying true to my clients’ personalities and the essence of the moment. These experiences taught me that photography is more than technical know-how—it’s about making people feel seen and capturing emotions they’ll treasure forever.

Today, I feel incredibly lucky to work with a diverse range of clients—from couples and families to retreats and weddings. Every session is an opportunity to tell a new story, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next.
